Roof Repointing & Brickwork | Maldon

Project Overview

Our team was recently called to a residential property in Maldon, Essex, where the customer had noticed signs of deterioration along the roof verge and chimney area. The original mortar had weathered and crumbled over time, leading to loose joints and potential water ingress. Repointing was essential to restore both the structural stability and weather protection of the roofline brickwork.

Before: Before our work began, the brickwork showed extensive moss and lichen build-up with cracking mortar joints and gaps in the pointing.

After: After the repointing was completed, the entire verge area had a clean, uniform finish with freshly applied mortar that securely sealed all joints – providing a renewed and professional appearance.

The Process

  1. Inspection & Preparation
    • We started with a thorough roof inspection to assess the extent of mortar damage.
  2. Rake Out Old Mortar
    • All loose and crumbling mortar joints were carefully raked out using hand tools to avoid damaging the bricks.
  3. Cleaning
    • The area was brushed down to remove debris and lichen, ensuring the new mortar would bond correctly.
  4. Repointing
    • We applied fresh mortar to the brick joints using traditional pointing techniques, matching the colour and texture to suit the existing brickwork.
  5. Finishing Touches
    • The pointing was tooled to ensure a smooth, watertight finish and any surrounding roof area disturbed during the process was cleaned and tidied.

Conclusion

This repointing project in Maldon not only improved the visual appeal of the roof but also significantly enhanced the integrity of the structure, helping to prevent future issues with water ingress or brick decay. Another successful job completed with long-lasting results and another happy client in Essex!
