Porcelain Patio & Gravel Garden Makeover in Wickford, Essex

We recently completed this porcelain patio and gravel garden makeover in Wickford, Essex, giving an established garden a fresh new look while keeping plenty of the existing plants and character that the homeowners already enjoyed.

Rather than completely changing the garden, this project was about making the space smarter, tidier and easier to maintain. The old patio was replaced with contemporary grey porcelain paving, while the existing gravel areas were refreshed and the flowerbeds given new timber edging.

Replacing the Existing Patio

The original patio outside the conservatory had become dated and no longer complemented the rest of the property.

We removed the old paving and prepared the area ready for its replacement. The new patio was then laid using large-format grey stone-effect porcelain slabs, creating a much more contemporary surface immediately outside the house and conservatory.

The subtle variation within the porcelain gives it the character of natural stone while providing the clean lines and consistent finish associated with porcelain paving.

New Grey Porcelain Paving

The new patio provides a lovely area for a table and chairs, making it a natural extension of the home’s indoor living space.

The paving has been neatly cut and laid around the property and existing planting, with a dark contrasting edge separating the porcelain from the gravelled section of the garden.

The grey tones also work particularly well with the exterior colour of the house and white conservatory, giving the whole area a much more coordinated appearance.

Fresh Gravel & Timber Edging

Away from the patio, we refreshed the garden with new decorative gravel, creating clean pathways around the existing flowerbeds.

One of the main aims was to retain the established planting rather than unnecessarily clearing the garden. New treated timber edging was installed around the beds, creating defined borders and giving the garden a much tidier structure.

The raised timber borders also help clearly separate the planting from the gravel pathways and make ongoing maintenance easier.

Keeping the Character of the Garden

What we particularly like about this project is that it hasn’t lost the character of the original garden.

The mature shrubs, flowers and established beds remain an important part of the space, but the new porcelain, fresh gravel and timber borders have brought everything together with a cleaner and more organised layout.

The result is a garden that still feels green and established while being smarter, easier to maintain and more enjoyable to use.
