Gravel Driveway Extension | Maldon

Project Overview

We recently completed this gravel driveway extension and front garden redesign in Maldon, Essex, transforming an underused section of the garden into a smart new driveway area while working neatly alongside the property’s existing block paving.

The homeowners already had a block paved driveway leading up to the house, but a large section of the frontage was occupied by grass, shrubs and planting. By redesigning this area, we were able to create considerably more usable driveway space without unnecessarily removing the existing block paving.

Clearing & Preparing the Front Garden

The project began with clearing the section of front garden that was being incorporated into the new driveway.

The existing grass, shrubs and unwanted vegetation were removed and the area was excavated using our mini digger. This gave us a clean starting point from which to prepare the ground properly for the new gravel surface.

Rather than completely changing the character of the frontage, the established palm-style trees were retained and incorporated into the new design.

Extending the Existing Driveway

The new driveway was designed to sit alongside the existing block paved driveway, giving the property a combination of two different finishes.

A light-coloured decorative gravel was chosen for the extension, providing an attractive contrast against both the darker block paving and the exterior of the house. The lighter surface also helps give the front of the property a brighter and more spacious appearance.

The existing block paved section around the entrance to the house was retained, with a dark block paved edge creating a clean transition between the two surfaces.

New Brick Planter & Timber Edging

One of the nicest features of this driveway redesign is the newly constructed brick planter along the front boundary.

The brickwork provides a smart, permanent edge to the driveway while allowing the established trees to remain as part of the landscaping. Timber edging was also installed along other sections to neatly contain the gravel and separate the new driveway from the neighbouring areas.

These finishing details help make the extension feel like a considered redesign of the whole frontage rather than simply an additional gravelled area.

A More Practical Frontage

The finished project has made much better use of the available space. What was previously a relatively large lawn and planted area has now become a spacious gravel driveway extension, providing additional usable parking while retaining some of the property’s original landscaping.

Combining the existing block paving with decorative gravel has also created a more interesting finish, while the new brick planter ties in nicely with the surrounding properties.
