Brickwork & Natural Slate Tile Roof | Maldon

Project Overview

Our team was recently tasked with restoring and improving the roof and chimney structure of a property in Maldon. The existing brickwork and slate roof were showing significant signs of age, including cracked bricks, loose mortar, and damaged slates that were allowing water to seep through. To ensure long-term durability and an improved appearance, we completed a full brickwork rebuild alongside a natural slate re-roof, blending traditional materials with expert craftsmanship.

Before: The original roof featured worn natural slates with several cracked and missing tiles, leaving the underlay and battens exposed in places. The lead flashing had deteriorated and the brickwork along the parapet wall was flaking and unstable. Moisture penetration had begun to affect both the internal and external structure of the property.

After: The finished roof now features a stunning natural slate finish complemented by newly restored brickwork and clean, precise lead detailing. The combination of modern roofing techniques and traditional materials not only enhances the appearance of the property but also provides decades of reliable protection from the elements.

The Process

  1. Site Preparation
    • We erected safe access scaffolding and carefully stripped back the damaged slate tiles, lead, and unstable brickwork to assess the full extent of deterioration.
  2. Roof Structure Repairs
    • Any compromised battens and underlay were removed and replaced with new breathable felt and treated timber battens to ensure a solid foundation.
  3. Brickwork Restoration
    • The old, crumbling bricks were removed and replaced with new red bricks to match the existing style. Fresh mortar was applied, and the parapet wall was rebuilt to restore stability and weather resistance.
  4. Leadwork Installation
    • New lead flashing was installed around the parapet wall junctions and roof valleys, providing a watertight seal between the brickwork and roof surface.
  5. Natural Slate Re-Roofing
    • High-quality natural slates were laid in a staggered pattern, securely fixed with copper nails for a traditional, long-lasting finish.
  6. Finishing Touches
    • All lead joints were pointed and sealed, ensuring the roof was left neat, tidy, and completely weatherproof.

Conclusion

This brickwork and natural slate tile roof project in Maldon is a great example of our dedication to craftsmanship and attention to detail. By fully restoring both the roof and brickwork, we’ve revitalised the property’s appearance and ensuring long-term durability and weather protection.
