New Garden Retaining Wall | Shenfield, Brentwood

Project Overview

The existing boundary wall was structurally compromised, rendered, and visually dated. It was failing to properly retain the raised patio area behind it. The primary aim of this project was to demolish the old structure and build a robust, new brick wall that would be both structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing, providing a clean and classic finish to the garden space.

Before: The original structure was a tired, white-rendered wall topped with a wooden trellis. It was showing signs of age and wear, detracting from the otherwise modern and well-maintained patio and garden area.

After: The transformation is significant. The new, classic red brick wall provides a clean, sharp, and timeless boundary. It perfectly retains the raised patio, creating a defined and high-quality finish that complements both the modern patio tiles and the property’s overall look. The addition of a matching brick pillar adds a sense of permanence and quality.

The Process

  1. Demolition & Site Preparation
    • The existing rendered wall and wooden trellis were carefully dismantled and removed from the site.
    • The old, inadequate foundations were broken up and cleared away.
    • The area was then excavated to create a trench for the new, solid foundations required for a retaining wall.
  2. Laying the Foundations
    • A substantial concrete foundation was poured into the prepared trench. This is the most critical step for ensuring the long-term stability of a retaining wall, preventing it from leaning or collapsing under the pressure of the soil behind it.
  3. Brickwork Construction
    • The main wall and the end pillar were constructed using high-quality red bricks, laid in traditional stretcher bond pattern.
    • Each course of bricks was meticulously laid using a spirit level to ensure it was perfectly level and vertically straight.
    • A damp-proof course was likely included at the base to prevent rising damp from affecting the wall’s integrity over time.
  4. Finishing & Site Tidy
    • The mortar joints were pointed to give a clean, professional finish that highlights the quality of the brickwork.
    • The site was thoroughly cleaned, leaving the client with a pristine new wall and surrounding area.

Conclusion

The project was completed successfully, resulting in a robust and visually appealing brick wall that has transformed the garden’s boundary. The new wall provides essential structural support for the patio and has significantly enhanced the overall aesthetic of the outdoor space. The key benefits for the homeowner include:
