Project Overview

This was a major landscaping project to complete redesign and rebuild a large, multi-level rear garden. The goal was to clear the entire overgrown space and create a modern, multi-functional garden. Key features included a new porcelain patio, extensive retaining walls, new steps, a custom built gazebo, and a new lawn.

Before: The garden was in a state of neglect. It was heavily overgrown with weeds and unmanaged shrubs. The existing retaining walls were failing, and the old patio and steps were unsafe and unusable. The space lacked any clear structure, making it impossible to enjoy.

After: The result is a total transformation. The original derelict garden is now a stunning, modern, and highly usable outdoor space. The clean lines, high-quality materials, and thoughtful design have created a peaceful, stylish, and incredibly inviting environment.

The Process

Massive Site Clearance
- The project began with the complete clearance of all vegetation, old walls, and structures. A mini-digger was used to excavate tons of soil and debris, taking the garden back to a bare canvas.
Foundations & Structural Work
- With the site cleared, new concrete foundations were poured from the extensive retaining walls needed to create new levels.
Building Retaining Walls & Steps
- Strong retaining walls were built using concrete blocks, then faced with a high-quality brick to create a durable and attractive finish. New, wide steps were constructed with matching brick risers and topped with porcelain paving to link the different levels seamlessly.
Construction of Gazebo
- A custom-built wooden gazebo was erected at the far end of the garden to create a sheltered seating and entertainment area.
Ground Preparation
- The different zones were prepared with the correct sub-bases. A compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base was laid for the patio areas, while the lawn area was levelled with high-quality topsoil.
Laying Surfaces
- Large-format porcelain patio tiles were laid to create a spacious upper terrace. A lush new lawn was laid in the central section. Decorative gravel and larger feature stones were used to create paths and a Japanese-style rockery.
Finishing Touches
- The project was completed with the installation of contemporary slatted screening for privacy, strategic planting including a feature tree, and a final, thorough site clean-up.

Conclusion

This project is a testament to what can be achieved with ambitious vision and expert execution. A completely unusable garden has been transformed into a spectacular extension of the home, adding significant value to the property. The clients were overjoyed with their new garden, which now provides a beautiful and functional space for their family to enjoy for many years to come.
