Conservatory Ridge & Verge Re-Bedding | Essex

Project Overview

This project involved essential repairs to the roof of a conservatory extension. The mortar on both the main ridge line and the gable end verge had failed, compromising the roof’s weatherproofing and stability. The objective was to completely re-bed these critical areas to restore the roof’s integrity, prevent water ingress, and secure the tiles for the long term.

Before: The existing mortar bedding for the ridge and verge tiles was cracked, loose, and had fallen out in several place. This left the tiles insecure and created clear entry points for water, which could lead to significant damage to the roof structure and the interior of the conservatory. The deteriorating mortar gave the roof a neglected appearance and posed a risk of tiles becoming dislodged.

After: The result is a fully restored and secure conservatory roof. The ridge and verge tiles are now solidly bedded in strong, fresh mortar, eliminating the risk of leaks or loose tiles. The clean, sharp lines of the new pointing have significantly improved the overall look of the conservatory, giving it a well maintained and professional finish.

The Process

  1. Safe Access & Preparation
    • Safe access to the conservatory roof was establish. The ridge and verge tiles were then carefully removed and set aside to be cleaned and re-used.
  2. Removed of Old Mortar
    • All the old, crumbling mortar was completely stripped from the ridge line and verge. The underlying surfaces were thoroughly cleaned to remove all debris and dust, ensuring a strong bond for the new mortar.
  3. Mortar Application
    • A strong, purpose-mixed sand and cement mortar was prepared. A full, fresh bed of mortar was expertly laid along the entire length of the ridge and down the verge.
  4. Re-Bedding Ridge & Verge Tiles
    • The original ridge and verge tiles were then securely re-bedded into the new mortar. Each tile was carefully positioned and aligned to ensure a uniform and structurally sound finish.
  5. Pointing & Finishing
    • The joints were pointed and finished neatly to create a smooth, watertight seal. This final step is crucial for both the roof’s performance and its final appearance.
  6. Site Clearance
    • Upon completion, the work area was thoroughly cleaned, and all old materials and debris were removed from the site.

Conclusion

The project to re-bed the conservatory ridge and verge was completed successfully. By addressing the failed mortar, we have secured the roof against the elements and restored its structural integrity. The client now has peace of mind knowing their conservatory is safe, weatherproof, and looks its best.
